Topo Map and Compass for the Wilderness Hiker
[10692]
A step-by-step approach to wilderness navigation where you will gain the confidence to hike cross-country (off trail), knowing exactly where you are. The course includes 2 evenings and 2 field trips. The first evening seminar covers topographic maps, declination basics, and supplies needed. The second evening concentrates on map contours - the unique feature of topo maps. The Saturday field trip meets in the mountains near Placitas. We hike 1-2 miles to a viewpoint, and learn how to use a base-plate compass, take compass readings, plot courses, practice triangulation, account for declination and learn to identify peaks by using map and compass together. On the Sunday field trip, we'll spend most of the day on a challenging routefinding hike of several miles, learning how to walk on compass bearing in open and forested country, around obstacles, plus routefinding in difficult terrain.
Tuesday, 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM; Saturday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM; Sunday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM; 4 sessions starting April 20, 2010, ending May 2, 2010
