A Psycho-History of Deviance

« back to classes page
The concept of deviance is a modern expression of the human tendency to construct the “other”, often in prejorative ways leading to demonization and extreme reactions.  This course is not only a history of how the idea of “deviance” came to be, or even merely a history of previous concepts, or the associated behaviors we might now consider deviant, but a “psycho-history.”  It will examine the psychological consequences of deviance and its predecessors throughout history and consider how and why these factors affected historical events and cultural development.  You’ll meet witches, alienists, bizarre criminals, fascinating “unique beings” and more!
