The 2016 Presidential Election exceeded even the 1948 “Truman Beats Dewey” campaign as the most unexpected and consequential result in living memory. Yet Donald Trump won with fewer votes than Mitt Romney did with in the 2012 Election. What does the data suggest as the more fruitful question: How did Mr. Trump win or how Ms. Clinton lost the election? What happened to the power of the Obama coalition? Are the narratives of awakened and angry white working-class voters claiming their place in the political sun real or the result of a carefully constructed and choreographed conservative agenda? What were the roles of racism, sexism, white nationalism and demagoguery? What do these portend as to the health of American democracy?
