Join us this summer to build your Jazz-playing and improvisation skills in a supportive and engaging environment. Participants will work with some of the region’s most respected musicians, including Cesar Bauvallet of the popular salsa band, Son Como Son. Previous experience playing Jazz is NOT a requirement. Camp eligibility is based on a minimum of one year experience playing an instrument, proficiency with scales (or keeping rhythm if a percussionist) and desire to focus on Jazz, a truly American art form. With an emphasis on soloing, participants will explore the art of Jazz improvisation by studying a variety of jazz styles at their own pace, while also learning music theory to help build understanding, skills, and confidence. Small combo work will integrate skills in improvisation, and reading with an emphasis on listening and group interaction. A portion of each day is reserved for listening to, and discussing Jazz trends, notable artists, and landmark sessions in Jazz history. Note: Students will present an end–of-camp concert for parents and friends on the final day.
