In a democracy, voters must be well-informed on issues at the local, state and national level. Fake news isn’t a twenty-first century invention, yet the internet and deliberate spread of misinformation for financial or political purposes, either through traditional news media or via social media is of increasing concern. In a news climate driven increasingly by ratings and paid advertising dollars, how do we separate fact from fake? Various speakers will give the issue of propaganda and the deliberate spread of misinformation historical and cultural context while exploring how informed news consumers may separate the wheat from the chaff in their media consumption.
