« back to classes page
Comedy is no laughing matter. It could be argued that the ability to entertain through comedy currently revials debate and discussion as a form of public discourse around social and political issues. We'll study the work of major American stand-up comedians and how, like any form of literature, their work informs and reveals the American ethos. We will look at the content, the various styles, the language play and the artistic contributions of creative artists like John Oliver, Whoopi Goldberg and Bill Maher and will examine the effect stand-up comedy has had on the national consciousness.
