Since 1964 when Republican nominee Barry Goldwater declared, “Extremism in the defense of Liberty is no vice!” the party of Lincoln and Eisenhower has steadily transformed itself to become the home many extremist movements. The Republican Party of 2017 could not be more different than that of President Eisenhower. What dynamics, ideologies, institutions and personalities guided this transformation? What does it mean for a balanced American democracy?
