Was Columbus a brave pioneer or the perpetrator of a genocide against native peoples? By examing the actual history of Chirstopher Columbus, to the extent it can be accurately determined, we will look at both the narrative of Columbus as the brave explorer and founder of the New World and other narratives as Columbus the initiater of a catastrophe for the native peoples. Is it possible to reconcile both narratives? Is it possible to recognize the historical significance and accomplishments of the man while acknowledging his shortcomings?
