'Documentary' can be defined as a creative way of dealing with reality. This course is an introduction to the art of documentary filmmaking. Through lecture and screenings, the class explores documentary techniques, genres and styles. We will discuss what makes a good documentary idea, and how to take that idea from concept to treatment to film project. We will set up and shoot an interview situation, and shoot cinema verité style. We explore the filmmaker's approach to his/her protagonist, and the situational awareness needed to come out with good documentary material. Students complete this course having gained the fundamentals of coverage, story structure, directing and producing in documentary. Prerequisite: 55911 or equivalent experience. Required equipment: Digital video camera (any type) or digital stills camera with video mode.
