David Bowie: Retrospective

Producer Tony Visconti claims that three weeks before the death of David Bowie (1947- 2016), the artist told him that he had written the first five songs for his next album. There’s little reason to doubt Visconti’s tale; Bowie was nothing if not prolific in a 50-odd year career which required him to reinvent himself at the drop of a hat. Bowie’s artistry goes far beyond singing, writing songs and acting, however, as the visual presentation and stagecraft of his shows would continually influence the course of popular music. When astronaut Chris Hadfield made an instantly viral video of himself in 2015 singing Bowie’s "Space Oddity" aboard the International Space Station nearly five decades after the song first became a hit, it was clear that Bowie’s repertoire had found a way to transcend not only time, but space.
