The second half of the 20th century has an international scope and an eclectic choice of styles and subjects. Through videos, lectures and discussion we will explore some of this variety ranging from striking drama to outreageous avant-garde creations and the development of exciting new operas from China. The operas to be covered are: Francois Poulenc, Les dialogues des Carmelites, 1957; Krzytsztof Penderecki, The Devils of Loudon, 1969; Philip Glass, Einstein on the Beach, 1976; John Adams, Nixon in China, 1987; and Tan Dun, Tea, 2002
