« back to classes page
The Ancient Astronaut Theory is a pseudoscientific hypothesis that posits that intelligent extraterrestrial beings have visited Earth and made contact with humans in antiquity and prehistory. The idea was proposed in earnest by Harold T. Wilkins in 1954. Proponents suggest that this contact influenced the development of human cultures, technologies, and religions. However, a 1986 article in The Skeptical Inquirer states that the idea that ancient astronauts actually existed is not taken seriously by academics, and has received little or no credible attention in peer reviewed studies. Ancient astronauts have been widely used as a plot device in science fiction. We will examine the connection between the Ancient Astronaut theory and Science Fiction. This will be done by discussing the history of the theory and how science fiction helped in its evolution in popular culture.
