The Sportin' Life - Why Do We Say That?

ID : 83638
« back to classes page

A ball, a bat, playing cards, a race track. All symbols of recreation, competition, and even gambling, but also the origin of countless terms and phrases that are part of everyday language. Some are obvious such as “batter up” or a “hole in one” while others are more obscure. Why is a left-handed pitcher called a “south paw”? What’s the origin of “close but no cigar”? Long before “the buck” reached Truman’s desk, it referred to playing poker. What do the Dodgers and trolleys have in common? Don’t “bandy words” but join us for language from the “sportin’ life” that “wins by a nose.”
