The United States and China: Is Confrontation or War Inevitable?

« back to classes page
While some analysts claim there is a “Thucydides trap” which makes confrontation between the USA and China unavoidable, the recent book The Beautiful country and the Middle Kingdom: America and China, 1776 to the present by John Pomfret explores the very deep and dynamic relationship between the two societies. For example, Pomfret points out while women doctors in the late 19th and early 20th centuries had great difficulties gaining acceptance to practice in the US hospitals, at the same time, in China, American women missionaries with medical training were successfully running clinics and hospitals annually treating thousands. Indeed much of China’s current medical establishment evolved the institutions originally founded by American women missionaries.
