« back to classes page
The New Democrats came to dominate the Democratic Party in the 1980’s and 90’s as a means of appealing to Southern whites and to accommodate the intellectual vigor of Ronald Reagan’s neo-liberalism. Toward the end of the second decade of the 21st century appeals to the fragile sensibilities of Southern white males and the failed doctrines of neo-liberalism are antiquated relics of a not-so-pleasant past. Can the progressives step forward with new vigorous proposals to address the challenges of global warming, infrastructure, income inequalities, the globalized economy, automation and artificial intelligence, and revitalization our democratic institutions in a post-Trump era?
