Why did Thomas Hardy stop writing novels (think Return of the Native,The Mayor of Casterbridge and many more) and turn to poetry at the beginning of the Twentieth Century? In this class we will examine his life and works and how the times he lived in affected his creativity and the decisions he made about his writing. We'll look at some of his most intriguing work to assess how successful he was in transferring his message from prose to poetry.
