« back to classes page
The course is an introduction to the art of Documentary filmmaking. Documentary can be defined as a creative way of dealing with reality. The class introduces Documentary genres and styles, while also offering hands on experience. We explore what makes a good Documentary idea, and how to take that idea from concept to treatment to film project. We look at three-act story structure, practice cinéma vérité style, and shoot different interview situations. Good coverage is essential for the edit process, so we explore the filmmakers’ approach to the protagonist, and what situational awareness is needed to come away with good documentary material. Students complete this course with the fundamentals to direct and produce their own Documentary. Note: Please bring a video camera (any type) or digital stills camera with video mode.
