After winning the first round of attrition at Guadalcanal the United States started moving up Solomon Islands chain to isolate the major naval and air base at Rabaul, the linchpin of Japanese defenses in the South Pacific.  This “island hopping” campaign featured the increasing skill and material superiority of the American forces pitted against unyielding Japanese resistance in inhospitable jungle environments.
