In the current political atmosphere there is much discussion of a divided nation. There was a time that division in this country was even worse. In fact, the country was so divided that in 1860-1861, eleven states seceded from the Union, leading to the Civil War. What caused the nation to divide so badly that states seceded from the Union only 72 years after the US Constitution went into force? There were many issues that caused division between the North and the South, but African-American slavery was, by far, the largest issue dividing the country. We’ll discuss the issues and crises that began early in our nation’s history and continued until war ensued. The discussion will include economic, political, cultural and demographic changes that came about to fuel the sectional division.
