We’ll discuss one of the most vexing issues in international relations: Israel, the Palestinians, and the legitimacy of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS). Israel’s policies towards Arabs and Palestinians are thought by some in the world community to constitute forms of colonialism and of apartheid. At the same time, Israel exists as a lone democracy in a region fraught with turmoil, theocracy and oppression of women and basic human rights. The growing BDS movement against Israel poses a dilemma: is this the most effective way for the world community to counter oppression and colonialism or is it merely another expression of anti-Semitism, calculated to justify violence against Israel?
