Several African-American regiments were raised during the Civil War as part of the Union Army including the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry whose story is told in the movie Glory. This unit was the second African-American regiment, preceded by the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Authorized by the Emancipation Proclamation, these regiments consisted of African-American enlisted men commanded by white officers.  The regiments were disbanded following the war.
