Romance novels are not a new phenomenon; they date back to ancient Greece! The modern romance genre was pioneered by the likes of Jane Austen with Pride and Prejudice (1814) and Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847), leading to a genre that made up more than 23% of the US fiction market in 2016, surpassed only by “general fiction.” How did Romance novels develop, what are they, and why are they so popular?
