We will examine the text, context and impact of “God Bless America,” “Mrs. Robinson,” and “I Feel the Earth Move.”  To be discussed more briefly will be “Blue Skies,” ‘White Christmas,” “For Emily Wherever I May Find Her,” “Scarborough Fair,” “Graceland” and its controversies, “It’s Too Late,” “You’ve got a Friend” and others.  This is intellectual history – influences, context, creation, impact, and legacies.  This is not a musical analysis of chord structure or progressions. This discussion will be focused on the absolutely central role of Jewish American musicians and songwriters in the creation of the 20th century American Songbook.
